| Gail Graduated from
Goldsmith's College, University of London in 1983. She went on
to create large one-off wall hangings and hand-painted clothes
inspired by her love of land and seascapes. Travelling in search
of exciting visuals has led her to over forty countries including
south east Asia, central and south America, the Caribbean and Australia.
The dramatic colour, shape and movement of tribal, dance and opera
costumes inspired Gail to work with theatre and ballet for the
rest of the 80s. After completing a PGCE at the UNiversity of Brighton
in 1994, she went on to teach art and textiles in Derbyshire.
Gail gave up secondary school teaching in 2002 to develop
her own work. She now teaches workshops in museums and schools (eg.
wax resist, papier maché, textile art) and is available for
Artist in Residence placements.

Artist's Statement: |

The ancient technique of batik was chosen to
create these pictures because of its tactile and sensuous qualities.
The was is applied by dripping, brushing and using traditional
tjanting tools from Indonesia. The dye saturates deeply into
the cloth creating vibrant and exciting colours to add resonance
to the final pieces.
As the clouds lift, the beauty of the moon and
sun are exposed and so I look towards the sky and imagine outer
space and how it all began. I use my artist's licence to play
with the planets by dressing them in glorious colours and making
them perform. |
