I originally trained as a ceramicist,
but textiles was always an equally strong interest. I developed
my interest
in batik in my early days of teaching, working on cotton using tjantings,
brushes and dip dyes. Textiles in many forms is now a passion, I
love to work not only in batik, but also I paint on silk, and do
machine embroidery and appliqué. I like to combine stitch
with batik especially on paper, and my current work involves the
use of wax, bleach, procion dyes, or inks, and stitch, often working
on tissue or hand made papers.
I am always drawn to natural forms, landscape being
my main focus, but also leaves and flowers. I use drawings and
my own photographs as inspiration. I always have my
camera with me, and capture
numerous images which I use to inform my work.
I have now given up full time teaching in
schools to concentrate on my own work as well offering courses
for adults in France and
in Shropshire. I run courses on batik, silk painting, machine embroidery
including collage and reverse appliqué. I also offer demonstrations
and work as a visiting artist in schools. I have exhibited in France
and in England, and sell my work through galleries and personal
contact. I have had an article on batik published in Leisure Painter. |
