Terry Pofahl is a non-traditional batik artist
who resides in New Jersey. She has a Bachelor of Fine Art from
Trenton State College and a Bachelor of Art from Rowan University
as well as an art teaching certification for K-12. She considers
herself a baby in this field having had just 10 years of active
art production and experimentation.
She first learned the resist and dye technique
while in high school in the mid seventies. Then 20 years passed
as she
started and raised
a family. In 1997 she broke out the block of paraffin and began
to create again. She experimented and like many batik artists,
came up with her own method.
She was disappointed in the
loss of detail
in her work and decided that extra care was necessary to
retain that detail. By using a permanent fabric marker in her
work
and varying the wax percentage using both paraffin and
bees wax she
is able to create detailed batiks with a wide variety of
colors.
Most of her work is on cotton and her focus on wall hangings.
She continues to produce work and teach workshops.
