I feel lucky to live and work in a village that has a thriving
community of artists.
I make resist dyed and painted (batik) hangings, soft furnishings
and garments from a variety of lustrous silks. My skills in dyeing,
together with my love of drawing, combine in a style that is disciplined
and infinitely varied. Images associated with water, rocks, waves,
trees or plants range from literal to mysterious. For example, a
design based on waves and rivultes across wind ribbed sand can transform
into winding serpents, fish or tree branches.
Hangings have been commissioned for settings in Australia, USA,
Europe and UK. My smallest request recently came from Maine, through
the Internet, for a design of dolphins to hang in a yacht.
Childhood years of travel between UK and West Africa awoke an early
interest in designs on artefacts and textiles. Later, I studied
textiles at Falmouth School of Art.
Travels to Africa, Australia, Asia and Europe, and holidays on
Iona have been deep sources of inspiration.
