| Lee Creswell is an experienced silk painter and batik artist whose
hand-painted wall hangings, paintings and scarves have been exhibited
at home and abroad. She was born in Malacca (Malaysia) and grew up
in a world of colourful batiks and silks. She first held a tjanting
in the early 50s when she learnt the intricacies of drawing with
liquid wax and found the procedure of waxing and dyeing fascinating
and challenging. It was in the late 70s when she took it seriously.
She now concentrates painting on silk and is a freelance tutor/demonstrator
in both batik and silk painting.
Lee is a nature and wildlife enthusiast, and enjoys
holidaying in ‘off
the beaten track’ places. Her works include seascape and
marine life; a favourite subject being the movement of water. Two
pairs of oriental doorway curtains were exhibited in the First International
Silk Painting Congress in the USA and since then she has exhibited
in galleries at home and abroad. Several of her paintings are displayed
in Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge, and two batik silk
pieces were included in “Batik for Artists & Quilters” book.
She was interviewed for articles in ‘Cambridgeshire Journal’ and ‘Popular
Crafts’ Magazines. Private commissions from America, Germany,
Japan and Addenbrooke’s Hospital. Lee gained a certificate
in Botanical Illustration as part of a Certificate of Education
with the University of Cambridge Adult Education.
