I first saw someone batiking when
I was a student of Theatre Design at Birmingham College of Art.
I watched while my fellow student melted the wax and painted a
design onto a costume; subsequently dipping it into a deep Prussian
Blue dye bath. The marbled pattern that appeared where the wax
has cracked fascinated me, so I bought an instruction book and
started experimenting in my spare time.
I originally trained as an art and craft teacher,
but also worked on many theatrical productions both amateur and
professional, as a set and costume designer. Gradually I spent
more and more time working on Batik. I felt that I had come home.
My work has been exhibited widely both at home and abroad. I
experiment a great deal and like to use both traditional and
improvised techniques.
