Heather first became interested in batik as an alternative to
oils during her foundation course. After marrying and having
a daughter, she began creating batik silk scarves at home, which
sold worldwide.
Heather became a member of the Batik Guild in 1986, and was Secretary
for four years.
The last ten years have marked a return to
her painterly roots, with works alternating between batik, painting & drawing. Figures
and water are recurring themes in Heather‘s work – often
representational, but also in a distant, dreamy, almost abstract
manner.
Her recent figure paintings are an expression
of the (female) human condition – the emotional destruction
we all suffer at some time.
The latest batik works, using paper and tissue,
are celebrations of colour, capturing the fluidity of hot wax
and liquid dyes – with
the resulting images often reminiscent of land or seascapes.
Heather also works in oils, acrylics and pastels.
She has completed several commissions for portraits, in graphite
and pastels.
Her influences include Gustav Klimt, Ewan Uglow,
Noel Dyrenforth and Hetty van Boekhout. |
