The Batik Guild is a UK-based non-profit making organisation which is financed by its members' subscriptions. It is run by volunteers. The Guild was founded in 1986 by a small group of artists who were interested in the craft of batik. Since that time it has grown to a membership of around 200. Members come from all over Great Britain as well as Ireland, Europe and beyond, and include professional artists, amateur artists, teachers and those who simply enjoy doing batik.
Our principal objective is to encourage a wider appreciation and understanding of batik as a centuries-old craft which continues to meet the needs of creative artists working today. We particularly hope to encourage its practice in schools and colleges alongside other more familiar art forms.
We produce a colour magazine (presently three times a year) which is an important way for members to communicate, discuss their work and exchange views and information which may be useful and interesting to other members. The Guild's web site was first set up in 1998 and is proving to be another useful tool for communication and promotion of the art of batik.
