The Batik Guild is a UK-based non-profit making organisation which is financed by its members' subscriptions. It is run by volunteers. The Guild was founded in 1986 by a small group of artists who were interested in the craft of batik. Since that time it has grown to a membership of around 200. Members come from all over Great Britain as well as Ireland, Europe and beyond, and include professional artists, amateur artists, teachers and those who simply enjoy doing batik.
Our principal objective is to encourage a wider appreciation and understanding of batik as a centuries-old craft which continues to meet the needs of creative artists working today. We particularly hope to encourage its practice in schools and colleges alongside other more familiar art forms.
The Guild aims to organise at least two national exhibitions of members' work in a year. Regional representatives and members also organise workshops, lectures, and meetings around the country.
We produce a colour newsletter (presently three times a year) which is an important way for members to communicate, discuss their work and exchange views and information which may be useful and interesting to other members. The Guild's web site was first set up in 1998 and is proving to be another useful tool for communication and promotion of the art of batik.
Membership runs from 1st April to 31st March, and includes three newsletters a year. Backdated newsletters are provided for the current year should you join during the year. Membership for new members is half price from 1st October (expiring 31st March).
