Working with textiles has been a hobby all my life, and about ten years ago I took some courses in textile art, including a batik course.
Working with beeswax brings me peace and reflection and the application of the pigments remains an enchanting experience.
In my batiks I want to capture a passing moment; for instance the falling of leaves in autumn.
I can also be worried about how precious nature is. I made several batiks on white cotton patchwork. The patches are a symbol for the vulnerable coherence in nature.
And sometimes I imagine in my work what I don’t understand in todays society, for instance what happened to the crafts.
Concerning this last subject: I found out that I had relatively little knowledge about textiles and their history. And I was wondering: how come that the crafts of our (grand)mothers often seems to have vanished.
I write about this textile history in a blog. It’s written in Dutch. The blog is called ‘Textielkunde’ which means Textile Science. It is a large subject so it is work in progress. The history of textile is women’s history; textile science tells us about the work of our foremothers.
